Biography
Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi is Pakistan's most successful tennis player and a doubles specialist who has carried the country's flag on the world stage for nearly two decades. Born on 17 March 1980 in Lahore, he took up tennis as a child and turned professional in 1998.
Career
Aisam reached the final of the 2010 US Open men's doubles with Rohan Bopanna of India and the final of the 2010 Wimbledon mixed doubles with Květa Peschke — becoming the first Pakistani to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era. He has won multiple ATP doubles titles and reached a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 8 in 2011.
His partnership with Bopanna — an Indian and a Pakistani playing together — became a global symbol of peace, and the pair were awarded the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award in 2010 and the UN's "Ambassador of Peace" medal. He has also been a stalwart of Pakistan's Davis Cup team for over two decades.
Legacy
Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi is regarded as the greatest tennis player in Pakistan's history, and his "Stop War, Start Tennis" campaign made him an ambassador for peace through sport. He was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2022 for his contribution to tennis.
