Biography
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq is a Pakistani politician of the PML-N who serves as the Speaker of the National Assembly. Born on 17 October 1954 in Lahore, he has represented the constituency of Lahore's NA-129 for most of his political career, making him one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in the country.
Political career
Ayaz Sadiq was first elected to the National Assembly in 2002 and was re-elected in 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2024. He served as Speaker of the National Assembly from 2013 to 2018, presiding over a stormy parliament with a reputation for patience and procedural fairness. He was re-elected Speaker in 2024 at the head of the new assembly.
He has also served as chairman of the Pakistan-United States Parliamentary Friendship Group and as a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association's executive, giving him a role in Pakistan's parliamentary diplomacy. He briefly served as a minister in 2022 during the caretaker period.
Legacy
Ayaz Sadiq is regarded as one of the most experienced and respected presiding officers in Pakistan's parliamentary history, known for his even-handed conduct of the house through some of its most turbulent sessions.
