Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar (28 September 1929 – 6 February 2022) was an Indian playback singer and one of the greatest and most influential singers in the history of Indian music. Known as the "Nightingale of India," she recorded over 5,000 songs in more than 36 languages over a career spanning seven decades. Her voice defined the sound of Hindi cinema from the 1940s to the 2000s. Born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Lata was the daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a Marathi and Konkani musician. After her father's death when she was 13, she began singing to support her family. Her early years in the film industry were difficult, with many composers rejecting her voice as too thin. She persisted and gradually became the most sought-after playback singer in India. Mangeshkar's most famous songs include "Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon" (1963, a patriotic song that moved the nation), "Lag Jaa Gale" (1964), "Tujhe Dekha To" (1995), "Didi Tera Devar Deewana" (1994), "Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye" (1992), and "Dil To Pagal Hai" (1997). She sang for virtually every major actress in Indian cinema, from Madhubala to Kajol. Beyond playback singing, Mangeshkar was a cultural icon who shaped the musical identity of India. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2001, becoming the second female vocalist to receive India's highest civilian honor. Her funeral in Mumbai in February 2022 was attended by the Prime Minister, President, and hundreds of thousands of mourners. Her legacy continues to inspire millions of singers and music lovers worldwide.
