M.K. Stalin

Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin (born 1 March 1953) is an Indian politician serving as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 2021. He is the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and the son of the late M. Karunanidhi, who served as CM of Tamil Nadu for five terms. Named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin by his revolutionary father, M.K. Stalin has emerged as one of the most powerful regional leaders in India. Born in Chennai (then Madras), Stalin entered politics through the DMK's youth wing at age 14. He was imprisoned during the Emergency in 1976 along with his father. He served as the Mayor of Chennai from 1996 to 2002, where he initiated several urban development projects. He was later elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and served as Deputy Chief Minister under his father's chief ministership from 2009 to 2011. After his father's death in 2018, Stalin assumed full control of the DMK and led the party to a decisive victory in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 133 out of 234 seats. As Chief Minister, he has focused on social justice, equality, and Dravidian ideology while also pursuing industrial development and attracting investment to Tamil Nadu. His government has launched the Kalaignar Centenary Library, expanded free breakfast schemes for school children, and increased investment in technology and manufacturing sectors. Stalin has positioned himself as a strong voice for federalism and against what he perceives as BJP's centralizing tendencies. He leads the INDIA alliance (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) at the national level, bringing together opposition parties against the BJP-led NDA. His leadership style combines the DMK's traditional Dravidian politics with modern governance and social welfare initiatives.
